Listen When God Speaks

For this reason we must pay much closer attention to what we have heard, so that we do not drift away.

Hebrews 2:1

The writer of Hebrews is saying that because God Himself who speaks to us, whether through the prophets, His Son Jesus, or the Holy Spirit, that we need to pay much closer attention to what He is saying to us. This would especially apply to what God is saying to us through His Word.

God has always chosen to speak to His people by one way or another, because He is a real and living person who values us and wants to communicate with us. But how tragic it is and how foolish we are, when we have God's words, when we have Him speaking to us on a regular basis, but do not pay careful attention to what He is saying, and we do not obey what He is calling us to.

It is crucial for us to stay close to God, to be in the center of His will and to know exactly what He is saying and doing. Obedience is the key to this and we see in Amos 8:11 that disobedience can lead to a famine of hearing the words of God.

Behold, days are coming, declares the Lord God, "When I will send a famine on the land, not a famine for bread or a thirst for water, but rather for hearing the words of the Lord" (Amos 8:11).

God is calling us to the things that He is speaking to us, and to not let even one word fall to the ground. Sometimes, in the busyness of the moment we can find ourselves "skimming" over parts of God's word, when we need to be sitting at His feet, studying, listening to Him and really learning what's on His heart. Now is the times, God is calling us to give more earnest heed to pay careful attention to His Word and what He is speaking to us.
